Vatican Shadow discloses a new tranche of sand-trampling drums and nightvision atmosfears.

Inspired by the titular, long-range reconnaissance aircraft made by the Lockheed Corp, and which was deployed during the Gulf War in the ’90s. As with Muslimgauze’s music, the results of Vatican Shadow’s take on his subject are allegorical, impressionistic, connoting a sense of dread and furtive intrigue that’s compelling in its own right.

Prefaced by the foreboding passage “never reveal the secrets of the world’s most ominous bird”, the music stakes out typical VS terrain with a stripped down arsenal of searchlight synths and syncopated rhythms nodding to dabke, dub and industrial techno musics. But there’s a particular focus on the sigh tone and some killer crushed drums this time, with the likes of ‘Outrunning Machine Gun Bullets’ sounding out like Salem via DJ Screw, and the shearing polychromatic pads of another highlight ‘Twilight Nail In Its Coffin’ recalling cinematic 0PN strokes, while he also touches on killer variants of dembow swag beside one serious, killer shot of BM-esque drill (just sans the trills and warp) on ‘The Other Blckbirds Required Shipping To Their Final Resting Places Which Necessitated Their Wings Being Sawed Off By Worldwide Aircraft Recovery’ - aye, he’s still got hat knack for catchy track titles.
