The Silvery Water (& Starry Earth) is a 12th centry alchemic manuscript "al-Mā’ al-Waraqī wa'l-Arḍ an-Najmīya) written by the hermatic Ibn Umayl. The artwork is an Illustration from a transcript 1211 of The Silvery Water. Ibn Umayl described a statue of an ancient sage holding a tablet inscribed with symbolic pictograms. He understands those to represent the quintessence of alchemical knowledge and names it The Letter from the Sun to the Moon. Later similar depictions were inspired by it, e.g. in Aurora consurgens and in Theatrum Chemicum.

"Aurora Consurgens" is a commentary by Thomas Aquinas a Latin translation of "The Silvery Water". Unusual for a work of this type, the text is accompanied by about thirty-seven fine miniatures in watercolour. The illustrations are representations of alchemical symbols depicted in human or animal form.
